LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to reflect on the progress of the LGBTQ+ community, celebrate milestones, and honour the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for equal rights. It’s also a chance to promote visibility, inclusion, and solidarity across communities. Supporting local LGBTQ+ owned businesses or LGBTQ+ friendly businesses during this month (and beyond) is crucial in building a culture of acceptance and helping ensure the LGBTQ+ community continues to thrive.
King Street’s Legacy of Pride and Inclusivity in Manchester
Over the years, King Street has been a champion of LGBTQ+ rights and a hub for Pride celebrations in Manchester. From raising awareness through community initiatives to supporting LGBTQ+ charities, King Street has consistently emphasised unity, inclusion, and love. Here’s a look at the past few years of Pride celebrations:
- 2019: King Street made a significant impact during Pride by raising funds and awareness with our highly sought-after bee badges and rainbow tote bags.
- 2020: Despite the challenges of the year, we remained committed to the spirit of Pride, spreading our #BeeSafe message and raising awareness for LGBTQ+ charities in Manchester.
- 2021: We partnered with The Pop Up Club, creating a pop-up shop on King Street during Pride weekend. All proceeds from our merchandise went towards supporting Manchester-based LGBTQ+ charities and raising awareness for important causes.
- 2022: The theme of kindness took centre stage as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first Pride rally. We raised funds once again for charity, supporting LGBTQ+ causes in Manchester and showing that #KindIsKing.
- August 2024: King Street transformed into “Queen Street”, hosting a vibrant celebration of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community. In collaboration with HEADS and Doll Parts, we showcased stunning images and stories of the city’s most iconic drag queens and LGBTQ+ figures, emphasising their profound impact on Manchester’s culture.
Spotlighting LGBTQ+ Owned Businesses on King Street
King Street is home to several LGBTQ+ friendly businesses that go beyond supporting the community during LGBTQ+ History Month, they do so all year long. One shining example is House of Books and Friends, an independent bookstore that has long championed LGBTQ+ literature, voices, and issues.
This February, House of Books and Friends is hosting a special event with Jake, the author of Shoulder to Shoulder: A Queer History of Solidarity, Coalition, and Chaos. In this powerful book, Jake explores the intersections of LGBTQ+ history with other marginalised movements, including the Black Panthers’ collaboration with the Gay Liberation Front in the US and Pride’s support for the miners’ strikes in the UK.
Event Details: Jake’s Book Launch at House of Books and Friends
Join them on Tuesday, 25th February for an enlightening discussion with Jake as they delve into the history of activism, solidarity, and the chaotic yet beautiful journey of joint liberation.
Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of queer literature, or simply interested in learning more about LGBTQ+ activism and its intersections with other movements, this event promises a fresh perspective on our shared human history. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation and celebrate LGBTQ+ solidarity.
Celebrating Diversity and Solidarity
As we continue to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, remember that supporting local LGBTQ+ businesses goes far beyond a single month—it’s about fostering a culture of inclusivity, equality, and solidarity that lasts all year long. Whether it’s attending events like Jake’s book launch or supporting other LGBTQ+ initiatives on King Street, your involvement helps ensure the LGBTQ+ community continues to thrive.
